ACCESSIBLE MOVEMENT LAB 2022
Welcome to The Movement Lab! We're here to help figure out something important: How can we design our movement classes so they can truly be for every body? There are countless classes advertised as “for every body” or “all bodies welcome.” Teachers, more often than not, lack the skill, knowledge and competency to teach, understand or even communicate to all bodies effectively. This leaves Disabled people to fend for themselves, to adapt, often without any additional guidance from the teacher, or extra time built into class to allow this to happen. In other words, disabled people are paying for instruction that they’re not actually receiving.
Over the course of this weekend, our incredible teachers will be employing a few basic strategies designed to efficiently incorporate a wider variety of bodies into their classes. None of these strategies are terribly complicated or require an in-depth knowledge of every disability or anatomical anomaly, but more of a flexible framework to be slightly tweaked and applied to different situations. Because this is something of an experiment, your feedback at the end is absolutely essential and we thank you for it.
