WORKSHOPS AND LECTURES
Creating a Joyful and Affirming Movement Practice
Saturday, May 14 10am-11:15am
Heron Alicia
An abstract movement workshop that invites us to explore our bodies, our minds, and our hearts through self-reflection, creative movement, and internal rhythm.
In this class, Heron Alicia will hold space for us to stir in our favorite movement ingredients, cooking up our very own delicious soup of joyful, affirming movement practices. The goal of this workshop is to expand the ways that we see our movement practice as dancers, movers, teachers, and humans, and add to our movement practice toolkits in ways that feel good to us.
We all have rhythm coursing through our bodies, and there are countless ways to move with that rhythm internally and externally. There will be a mix of body and mind prompts that invite us to create movement, ideas, scenery, and concepts around dance + movement, and there will be options to physically move our bodies to music, move our bodies without music, and imagine movement while staying still in our bodies.

Limb Rotation as Combined Therapy and Dance
Saturday, May 14 12pm-1pm
Ziah uses CARs/Controlled Articular Rotation, a form of Physical Therapy as therapy and dance all rolled into one. CARs movement is half extension and half contraction of limbs. Finding this happy medium creates movement while exploring and developing range of motion, all while building strength. This will be an exploration of how to use CARs as Dance for your personal goals. Bring questions, and come with a willingness to explore movement in an unconventional way. This class is truly open to all dance styles and bodies because you will be using the methods to develop your own movement, not following the lead of the teacher.

Dance Improvisation

Dance Improvisation is a 90-minute class that will focus on how to generate movement, how to recognize recurring movement patterns, and how to create a "score" to transition improvisation into set movement choreography. This class is for students of any level of experience and any style of movement.

Through an intersectional Disability Justice lens, we will learn & investigate how ableism is deeply embedded in dance education and in our dance practices. This workshop will provide educational information along with interactive prompts that will help ignite the process of dismantling our biases and internalized ableism in our dance practices. This serves as an introductory workshop of the Dismantling Ableism in Dance series!
